Gillian Moore has been at the forefront of contemporary music for nearly 30 years, many of those spent with the London Sinfonietta. She first joined the group as education officer in the early 1980s – the first such post of its kind in the UK. Gillian pioneered classical music education programmes, bringing performers and new music into schools, and helped shape the tastes and expand the imaginations of countless children across the country. Gillian then filled a similar role at the Southbank Centre before returning to the London Sinfonietta as Artistic Director in 1998. For the last 3 years Gillian has been Head of Contemporary Culture at Southbank Centre.
Do you enjoy contemporary music, or do you shy away from it? Do you feel children should be educated in new music at school? Gillian Moore is the woman behind the push to bring children to music and adults to new musical experiences. Speaking to Gillian, I entered the world of modern culture via the back door. It was fascinating to hear music talked about from such a specific standpoint while discovering how she has brought people of all ages to connect with music.
